We were shocked to see the recent price rises announced by Royal Mail, who seem set on a suicide mission. The new prices mean that the cost of posting a single magazine will rise by the following: UK (20%), Europe (82%), Rest of World (66% - 68%).
As you may know, we increased our subscription rates in 2011 (the first increase in over 25 years!) and we are keen to avoid having to propose another increase. We also believe that subscribers continue to appreciate the printed magazine. So our immediate response will be twofold. Firstly, we are likely to limit the number of pages to 24 (that was the number of pages for all editions from 2000 until 2007, when we increased to 28 pages). This will ensure that single editions slip under the 100g weight boundary. Secondly, for our overseas subscribers, we shall promote the paperless option. If you are based overseas and would be happy to receive the magazines by email (downloadable from a 3rd party website) we shall charge you the UK subscription only. So if you convert to paperless and have paid in advance for your subscription, I would add an appropriate credit depending on the expiry date. Thirdly, and this doesn’t affect subscribers at all, we shall normally send out any sample magazines (eg to potential new subscribers) by email only.
As always, your comments and suggestions are welcome. Contact me any time by email or phone 0777 150 6950.
The latest magazine was posted on 28th March, and I look forward to your feedback and further news.
