The prefect system was used at BHCHS from the early 1940s until 1964. In the editorial of the school magazine 1964, the last "School Captain" Bob Byde wrote the following comment: Why not replace the prefectorial system of authority with a more collective system of responsibility? He then went on to speculate how such a system might work.
By the end of the summer holidays, headmaster JH Taylor had accepted Byde's recommendation and the prefect sytem was replaced by the Sixth Form Council.
