A Remarkable Archive

A Glimpse into the Past is a DVD containing three films taken by John Robins (who taught French and Latin) during the period 1966-70.

The first film was shot in 1966, Spud's final year as Headmaster. It covers the full range of school activities.

The second film, taken in the Summer Term 1967 and the Easter Term 1968, begins to show the changes some subtle and some more dramatic, following Hugh Colgate's appointment.

The third film was taken in the school year 1969/70 and sees more changes and innovations, along with the retirement of some of the longest serving staff.

The total footage of 55 minutes forms a remarkable archive. We are very grateful to John Robins for allowing us to transfer the films to DVD. This will be of interest to former pupils from earlier and later periods. Many of the scenes show staff who taught at BHCHS during the 40's, 50's, 70's and 80's.

Some highlights on this disc:

  • Interview with "Harry" Samways paying tribute to Arnold Smethurst on his retirement.
  • Scenes from the Dining Hall, including some amusing comments from the kitchen staff.
  • Ted Moore's excruciating dance class containing a rather interesting shot of a future Member of Parliament.
  • Interviews with Eric Franklin, including an amazingly prophetic comment about computers.
  • Action from the Staff versus First XI match - one of Tom Leek's last appearances on the football field?
  • The first "Spring Fair" - Bob Sears' magnificent fund raising effort.
  • Jim Irving (senior) extolling the virtues of open-topped cars.
  • For transport enthusiasts - the 167 bus, and the Central Line trains.
  • Gerry Brown's innovation - a Careers Office.

And many more.
